Stain Removal

How to Remove Coffee from Car Carpet

Blot up as much liquid as you can with a dry white towel, press, don't rub. Then clean it with a stiff carpet brush and a wet/dry vacuum if you have one, working gently, and dry it fully. Automotive carpet sits on a padded backing that soaks up liquid, so the visible stain is often only part of the problem.

Why coffee is tricky on car carpet

Coffee carries tannins that dye fibers brown, and milk or sugar in it leaves a sticky, sour residue on top.

Automotive carpet sits on a padded backing that soaks up liquid, so the visible stain is often only part of the problem.

Step by step

  • Blot up as much liquid as you can with a dry white towel, press, don't rub.
  • Mix a teaspoon of clear dish soap into two cups of cool water.
  • Work the solution in lightly from the outside of the stain toward the center.
  • Blot with a clean towel until no more brown transfers.
  • Follow with a splash of 1:1 white vinegar and water to lift remaining tannin.
  • Rinse with plain water and blot dry.
  • Extract as much moisture as possible and keep air flowing so the padding doesn't mildew.

What to avoid

  • Hot water, which can set tannin stains
  • Bar soap that leaves a film
  • Over-wetting the padding

Test first

Always test any cleaner on a hidden spot of car carpet first and wait a few minutes to check for color change.
