How to Remove Chewing gum from Vinyl and Plastic Trim

Harden the gum with an ice pack in a plastic bag for several minutes. Then clean it with an all-purpose interior cleaner and a soft detail brush, working gently, and dry it fully. Dashboards, door panels and vinyl seats are durable but can discolor or turn shiny with the wrong chemicals.

Why chewing gum is tricky on vinyl and plastic trim

Gum is a sticky polymer that softens in heat and grips fibers. Freezing makes it brittle so it lifts in pieces.

Step by step

  • Harden the gum with an ice pack in a plastic bag for several minutes.
  • Pick and scrape the brittle gum away with a plastic card.
  • Treat remaining residue with a small amount of citrus-based adhesive remover (test first).
  • Blot the residue away.
  • Wash the area with a mild soap solution.
  • Rinse and dry.
  • Wipe dry and finish with a non-greasy UV protectant.

What to avoid

  • Pulling soft gum, which stretches it deeper
  • Peanut butter or oils that create a second stain
  • Greasy dressings that attract dust
  • Abrasive pads that scratch

Test first

Always test any cleaner on a hidden spot of vinyl and plastic trim first and wait a few minutes to check for color change.
