Do not rub, rubbing spreads the ink into a larger mark. Then clean it with a stiff carpet brush and a wet/dry vacuum if you have one, working gently, and dry it fully. Automotive carpet sits on a padded backing that soaks up liquid, so the visible stain is often only part of the problem.
Why ink is tricky on car carpet
Ballpoint ink is dye suspended in oil, so it spreads when wet and bonds quickly to fabric and vinyl.
Automotive carpet sits on a padded backing that soaks up liquid, so the visible stain is often only part of the problem.
Step by step
- Do not rub, rubbing spreads the ink into a larger mark.
- Dab a little isopropyl alcohol onto a cotton swab (test first).
- Touch the swab to the ink and lift; switch swabs as they pick up color.
- Work from the edges inward.
- Wipe the area with a mild soap solution to remove alcohol residue.
- Rinse and blot dry.
- Extract as much moisture as possible and keep air flowing so the padding doesn't mildew.
What to avoid
- Hairspray, which leaves sticky residue
- Soaking the stain with alcohol
- Over-wetting the padding
Test first
Always test any cleaner on a hidden spot of car carpet first and wait a few minutes to check for color change.
